The Definition: Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics and this is where the name aqua-ponics originates. It is a sustainable food production system that combines a traditional aquaculture with hydroponics in a symbiotic environment.
Fish are the force behind an aquaponics system. Fish provide nutrients for the plants. Fish can also provide protein for food. Maintaining fish in an aquaponic system is simpler than keeping aquarium fish. Following simple guidelines you can grow fish from finger size, to ready to eat.
What can you grow in an aquaponic system? Anything! Most herbs and vegetables develop well in an aquaponic system. Root plants such as carrots grow well in media beds or a bed filled with gravel. Deficiencies are easily handled with a variety of seaweed extracts.
